Dinoroar Dinosaur Cards...Nearing Extinction

The Dinoroar stamp set will soon be extinct...I mean retired. If you want it, you'll need to get it now because it won't be in the new Stampin' Up! catalog on June 1st.

I really like this stamp set for kids birthday cards and valentines.  There aren't too many stamps sets that make cute valentines for little boys.

The dinosaur images look great whether they're colored in or not. For the birthday card, I stamped the image in black and heat set it. Then I colored it in with Stampin' Write Markers to match the color scheme of the card. Heat setting the black ink stops it from smudging when you color the image in.

For the valentines I just stamped the image in the same color ink as the card stock. No need to color them in...they look great as is. These are quick and easy valentines which is a necessity when make 24-30 for a classroom of kids!

Happy Birthday Card...Summer Smooches

Summer Smooches is one of my favorite retiring designer papers. I love the bright colors and fun patterns! Today I used it to make this fun and summery birthday card.

Notes:
  • For the background and center oval, I used two coordinating patterns from the Summer Smooches Designer Paper. It's so easy to pull coordinating papers from the paper packs!
  • The "Happy Birthday" greeting is from the Itty Bitty Banners Stamp Set and cut out with the Bitty Banners Framelits.  These two products coordinate with each other making it super easy to cut out your greetings.
  • The red ovals were cut out using the Oval Collection Framelits. These nesting framelits are great for layering!
  • The flower embellishment was created by layering different sized scallop circles.
  • I punched out some butterflies with the Elegant Butterfly punch and added some Stampin' Up! Rhinestones to the butterflies and flower for some added bling. I also used Stampin' Dimensionals® on the butterflies and flowers to give the card some added dimension.

Materials:
  • Card Stock:
    • Whisper White (base)
    • Real Red
    • Pacific Point
  • Designer Paper:  Summer Smooches (125409 - retiring)
  • Stamp Set:  Itty Bitty Banners (126257)
  • Ink:  Pacific Point (126951)

Cute Little Party Favor Purses

Look at these cute little purses. They are the perfect party favor for birthday parties or bridal showers. Even though they look small, they will hold about 10 Hershey Kisses. What could be better? A cute purse AND chocolate!

They measure approximately 2 7/8" x 1 7/8" x 1 3/8" (not including handle) and are super easy to make with the Petite Purse Big Shot die.

TIPS:

  • I used sticky strips (104294) when assembling these boxes for a strong bond.
  • I attached the handles with glue dots (103683) but I think brads would work well too!

Materials:

  • Cardstock:  Daffodil Delight, Tangerine Tango, Melon Mambo, Whisper White
  • Tools & Accessories:
    • Big Shot (113439)
    • Petite Purse Die (125606)
    • 7/8" scallop circle punch (129404)
    • 1/2" circle punch (119869)
    • Scallop from Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack (118309)
    • Sticky Strip (104294) and Glue Dots (103683)

Handmade Tags...Wish Big!

These tags would look amazing attached to gift packages or party favors. You could even tie them around your napkins for really cute napkin rings and if your wrote your guest's names on the back they could double as place cards.

Instructions:

  • Cut out Natural Ivory card stock in the shape of  the scallop tags.
    • I used my Cricut and George Basic Shape cartridge.
    • You could also use your Big Shot and the Sizzix Tags, Scallop Combo #2 Die.
  • Stamp the front of the tag with the Wish Big stamp from Bring on the cake stamp.
    • I used Early Espresso but you can use whatever color matches your party theme.
  • Use daubers to rub ink around the edges of the tags for an aged distressed look.
  • Tie on a bow in matching satin ribbon.

  • Card Stock:  Natural Ivory
  • Stamp Set:  Bring on the Cake

I was feeling totally uninspired and unmotivated today so I did what everyone does when they're lacking motivation and inspiration, I went on Pinterest.

Wow, am I glad I did. While browsing around, I came across these gorgeous paper mache cups and saucers by Swedish artist, Cecilia Levy. Of course after finding these on Pinterest, I had to visit her website and blog

Gift Wrap with Handmade Flowers

Aubrey was invited to a birthday party this weekend but we didn't have a pretty bow to put on the gift she was bringing. No problem! We just made up a few of the handmade flowers from the tutorial in my previous post, added some ribbon, a couple of punched out butterflies, a few acrylic gems for bling (every little girl loves bling!) and we had a gorgeous package!

TIP:  The center of the flower is the top scallop in your stack (see tutorial). If you want the center of your flower to be in a contrasting color, just change out the top scallop.

Materials:
  • Card Stock:  Melon Mambo, Tangerine Tango, Daffodil Delight (Stampin' Up!)
  • Tools:  2 3/8" Scallop Punch (Stampin' Up!)  Butterfly Punch (EK Success)
  • Accessories:  Acrylic Gems (Stampin' Up!) Green Glitter Ribbon (Michaels), brads

Handmade Paper Flowers...a Tutorial

These handmade paper flowers are really beautiful and they can be used to decorate so many things. I like to put them on the little cake favor boxes I showed you yesterday. I also like to add them to my gift wrapping. With some ribbon, they make packages look so elegant!

Follow the simple steps to make these pretty paper flowers:

1.  Punch 6 scallop circles out of card stock.  Any size...the larger the circle....the larger the flower.

2.  Spritz the scallops with water and scrunch up as tight as possible.

3. Flatten them back out and stack them (try to alternate the peaks of the scallops) and put a brad in the middle to hold the stack together.

4. Starting with the top scallop, squish each scallop up around the brad as tightly as possible.

5. Gently unsquish (is that a word?) the scallops to form a flower.

To make the leaf:

1. Punch out either an oval or a scallop oval from green cardstock.

2. Spritz the oval with water and fold it lengthwise (hotdog) and then accordian fold.

 4. Unfold to form leaf.

5. Hot glue leaf to bottom of flower.

That's it....you're done.  Now make yourself a bunch to decorate your life!

Material List:  (All supplies Stampin' Up! except misc supplies)

  • Card Stock:  Pretty in Pink, Certainly Celery
  • Punches:  1 3/8" Scallop Circle, Scallop Oval, Large Oval
  • Misc:  Hot glue gun, brad, paper piercing tool, water spray bottle

Cake Slice Wedding Favor Box

Did you know that 17% of all weddings occur in June making it the most popular wedding month.  In fact I just got an order today for these cake slice favor boxes.
www.acarrdiancards.etsy.com
The bride today requested ivory and pink, which has always been a wedding staple. But word has it that mint is the trending wedding color for 2013. Luckily, these boxes can be made in any color combination to match whatever color palette the bride chooses.

Take a look around the internet.  You'll see mint everywhere!

As a paper crafter, I am always looking for color inspiration.  Wedding and interior fashion websites are a great place to start.

Project Instructions:
Instructions on making your own "Cake Slice Favor Box" can be found in this post:  A Piece of Cake.  I will post instructions for making the handmade flowers tomorrow.

Why Give a Handmade Card?

Why give a handmade card? This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. It's easy to go to the store and buy a card. You can even get some cute cards at the Dollar Store. So why give a handmade card? What makes a handmade card so special?

First Let's Look at Mass Produced Cards:

  • Mass produced cards are just that, massed produced.
  • Thousands of copies of the same card are printed and sold by retail stores around the country.
  • There is really nothing special about a mass produced card.
  • They are flat and lack personality.

Qualities of Handmade Cards:

  • Handmade cards possess a unique artistic quality that mass produced cards lack.
  • Most handmade cards are either “one of a kind” or “limited editions”.
  • They are hand constructed and designed by the artist.
  • Handmade cards often have multiple layers of card stock and designer paper.
  • They may feature hand stamped and colored images.
  • They can be embellished with ribbon, buttons, die cuts or bows. They have texture and feel luxurious.
  • They satisfy the senses.

People know and appreciate the thought that goes into either creating or selecting a hand crafted card. Each individually crafted card takes on it's own personality and reflects your personal style. If you are creating your own cards your designs choices are limited only by your imagination. You are free to design a card that is perfect for the intended recipient.

If you are purchasing your handmade cards online from an Etsy seller or other individual, you will likely find that the card maker is more than willing to create cards especially for you.

Teacher Gift Card Holder for Male Teachers

Handmade Gift Card Holder - Male Teacher
Handmade Gift Card Holder for Male Teacher
My kids pointed out that I pretty much make only "girly" cards....Probably because I'm a girl.

Well, with that in mind, I made up this masculine teacher gift card holder.

Even though Teacher Appreciation Week ends tomorrow, it's never too late to show our teachers some gratitude. I think this handmade gift card holder is perfectly suited for male teachers.

I chose blue and green striped paper and coordinating blue script paper from the Stampin' Up! Print Poetry Designer Paper Stack. Both the stripes and and the coloring make this a more masculine card.

Instructions for making the gift card holder can be found in this blog post: Holiday Gift Card Holders

Thinking of You with a Handmade Card

Stampin' Up! Thinking of You Card

Today's card is a "Thinking of You" card.

My mom recently asked me to make her a supply of handmade cards. She needs a whole variety...birthday, get well, thank you...but what she really wants are "Thinking of You" cards.

The Convert:
My mom has never been someone who sends out cards.  Recently, on a whim, she sent one out to a friend that she hadn't seen for several years. The heartfelt response she received to that card was enough to convert her into a "card sender".  She had never realized how much something as simple as sending out a card could mean to someone.

The Confession:
I have a confession to make.  Even though I make and sell cards for a living, I am awful about actually sending them out to people. I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree. So, as soon as I finish making a stack of cards for my mom, I am going to start my own card sending campaign...or at least I'm going to try...

Some Notes:

  • This thinking of you card was created with paper from the Print Poetry Designer Series Paper Stack which can be found in the Spring Mini Catalog.
  • With all of the excitement about the color refresh, the retiring list and the new catalog, I had forgotten that the products in the mini catalog were still available until May 31.
  • There are some pretty awesome products in the Mini Catalog.
  • If you need a copy let me know and I'll send one out to you. I still have several of them left.

Card Making Tip - adding a few pearls to the punched out butterflies really makes them POP!  It always amazes me what a difference such a small detail makes in the look of my card.

Materials List:  (All supplies are Stampin' Up! unless otherwise noted)

  • Designer Paper:  Print Poetry (#129312 - Spring Mini Catalog)

  • Ink:  Midnight Muse

Handmade Gift Card Holder for Teacher
Handmade Gift Card Holder

Today kicks of Teacher Appreciation Week which runs from Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10.

This is the time to remember those teachers that have made a positive impact on your children's lives and to show how much you appreciate them.

Many teachers spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets to supply their classrooms with the supplies necessary to teach our children. Why not express your gratitude with a gift card to a favorite store or restaurant.

This teacher gift card holder is a beautiful way to give out your gift cards.

  • It has a little pocket to hold the gift card and a velcro closure to keep it closed.
  • It was made using Summer Smooches designer paper and the "Teacher" stamp is from the Family Reunion set.
  • The yellow butterfly is embellished with little pearls making it a really special card.

Both the Summer Smooches designer paper and the Family Reunion stamp set will be retiring at the end of the month. The Family Reunion set is perfect for personalizing all of your cards and gifts. Almost all relationships are covered. Summer Smooches designer paper is so bright and cheery it should definitely be on your must have list!

The end of the school year is always a busy time. But when your student is a senior, the frenzy gets kicked into high gear! There's prom, grad bash, senior picnic and senior breakfast. 5.  You hate to shop and you can pick up a gift card at pretty much any grocery store or pharmacy.

Wait.  I guess I have six reasons...

6.  You can put the gift card in this really cool gift card holder that Mom will LOVE!!!!

Mother's Day...Only 9 More Days!

Handmade Mother's Day Card
Handmade Mother's Day Card
Only 9 more days to find the perfect card for Mom!  If yesterday's card wasn't quite your style, how about this one?  It was made with some Stampin' Up! paper that I had in my huge stash of retired products...but you you could use this basic design with any coordinating papers. I really have to use up some of my old papers!!!

I think cutting the coordinating paper strip and the the greeting into "flags" gives it a little something special. I have a feeling I'll be hooked on this technique for a while. I really seem to go through phases of repeating the same layout over and over again.  I just vary the paper and the greeting and it's a whole new card.

If you love this card, it's available for purchase on ETSY.  If you'd like to make your own, here is a list of supplies minus the designer paper. You'll have to pick some paper out of your own stash. :-)

Material List:  (all supplies are Stampin' Up! unless otherwise noted)

  • Stamp Set:  Delightful Dozen (#122652 Clear Mount)
  • Ink:  Always Artichoke
  • Card Stock:  Very Vanilla, Baja Breeze, Alwasy Artichoke
  • Accessories:  Always Artichoke Seam Binding (121000 - retired list), Designer Button - Subtles (119745 - retired list), Cream Crochet Thread (JoAnn's)
